After graduating with top honours from Ryerson University in Toronto, and apprenticing in the industry for six years, Raymond Murakami established his own firm in 1989.
Since then, Murakami Design Inc. has grown steadily to become a respected presence in the city, completing new homes and renovations in such exclusive neighbourhoods as Rosedale, Forest Hill, The Bridle Path, The Kingsway and Lawrence Park.
The firm is also gaining attention for its work internationally. It designed and managed the extensive reconstruction of an Upper East Side brownstone in Manhattan, and worked in Florida with renowned town planners Duany Plater-Zyberk developing several houses in a new community north of Istanbul, Turkey.
The Murakami team begins each project with an in-depth understanding of the client’s practical requirements, stylistic preferences and budget parameters. Then, we apply our creative expertise to unite these various factors into a coherent design solution.
“It’s a very delicate balance, says Raymond Murakami. “On one hand, we work from the outside in, developing architectural forms and carefully positioning them on the site. At the same time, we develop the most functional configuration of interior spaces and complete them with an appropriate facade.”
“A home should have its own rhythm, with spaces that naturally lead from large to small, from light to dark. A sense of drama is important, but we consciously avoid being overly theatrical. Whether we’re designing a spacious city home or a secluded family cottage, we understand the subtle pleasures of a breakfast room bathed in sunshine, or a private view of treetops from a bedroom window.”
A breadth of expertise is required to create and build homes of exceptional quality, and all these talents can be found within the Murakami team.
Founder and president Raymond Murakami, who is actively involved in every project, is supported by a full-time staff of eight. Team members include talented architects, interior designers and architectural technologists who work together in developing each design solution, as well as project managers and quantity surveyors who supervise the many tradespeople involved in the construction and completion of each residence.
In total, the Murakami team has over seven decades of combined experience designing and building custom homes.
